Saumu Nungu

Dr. Saumu Iddy Nungu is a distinguished Public Health Specialist (Epidemiologist) with over fifteen years of expertise in the Tanzanian Health System. Throughout her career, she has collaborated with international organizations and the Tanzanian Ministry of Health, contributing to the establishment and functioning of Public Health Emergency Operation Centres in the country. Dr. Nungu has played a key role in the National Task Force, focusing on preparedness and response to various public health events. This includes participation in Joint External Evaluation (JEE) Assessments and conducting Strategic Risk Assessments for Health Emergency plans at the national level.

Beyond her involvement in these critical activities, Dr. Nungu has served as a facilitator in various capacities. These include Marburg After Action Review (AAR), COVID-19 Intra Action Review, and the AFRO AVoHC SURGE program. She has offered insights into Humanitarian overviews and introduced the Cluster Approach module. Her regional coordination skills are evident through her collaboration with the East African Community (EAC) and the Southern African Development Community (SADC) organizations.

Dr. Nungu's expertise also extends to Quality Assurance. She has actively participated in coordinating Quality and Inspectorate services within Referral Hospitals at the Regional, Zonal, and National levels. This showcases her commitment to maintaining high standards in healthcare delivery.

• Generated daily Situational Awareness (SA)on Diseases and Public Health events to aid decision making
• Facilitated the development of Country Risk Profile and specific contingency plans for identified hazards
• Facilitated effective collaboration and mutual understanding among professionals from different countries.
• Coordinated the review and development of Regional Response plans for COVID-19 across 21 regions
• Effectively set up and ensured the functioning of 11 subnational Emergency Operation Centres.
• Managed the development of training materials for Tanzania's Public Health Emergency Management
• Headed the investigation into the 2015 Cholera outbreak in Tanga, where identification of water contamination resulted in targeted interventions and a decrease in new transmissions.
• Coordinated development of National Standards and guidelines for Referral Hospitals
• Coordinated assessments, inspection and provided supportive supervisions for health care facilities.
• Showcased proficiency in collecting, analyzing, and interpreting hospital data.
• Created tools for disease surveillance and data collection within the facility, including electronic line lists.
