Summary

Dr Wambura is a proven program evaluator, a researcher and leader; and a technical expert in health, gender and parenting studies and social inclusion, economic empowerment and youth evaluations; who is known for developing successful collaborations with partners in private, public and NGO sectors. He has over 10 years of experience managing and providing technical assistance and oversight to donor-funded programs. Using his essential mix of skills mainly in leadership; research and programs, data analysis, training and human resource management, Dr Wambura has initiated and led several large-scale successful health research projects. For the past twenty years, Dr Wambura has been working with the National Institute for Medical Research (NIMR) Mwanza, providing mentorship and visionary leadership to health research projects. In his position as a researcher, Dr Wambura initiated collaborations with several international partners including Jhpiego, FHI and the London School of Hygiene and Tropical Medicine (LSHTM) among others. He was the lead researcher in NIMR for a five-year USAID-funded project. He was the principal investigator for the VMMC study with multiple international partners funded by CDC Atlanta. Dr Wambura has led multi-agency partnerships, and a team of Tanzanian professionals, in the joint implementation of the research and program evaluation activities working closely with government and local stakeholders. Dr Wambura holds a PhD degree in Epidemiology from the LSHTM in the United Kingdom, a Master of Science degree in Medical Statistics from the same school based in the United Kingdom and a Bachelor's degree in Statistics from Makerere University, in Uganda. His work with NIMR Mwanza was recognized by an award for the best research scientist of the National Institute for Medical Research in 2008.   • Project Description: This assignment aimed at assessing the extent to which Norwegian support has contributed to HIV & AIDS response globally, regionally and in selected countries of Tanzania, Malawi and Ethiopia

  • Project description: I conducted a baseline survey for the Malaria Control project in Serengeti District to measure pre-intervention levels of awareness of malaria causes, risks, and symptoms and assess health-seeking behaviour
  • My other responsibilities included initial preparation before the start of the evaluation mission, data collection and analysis, writing a report of the evaluation, reviewing comments on the draft report and finalising the report for African Medical and Research Foundation (AMREF) approval., of NIMR Mwanza Research Methods training committee

  • For this study, I was a member of the Technical Working Group for Male circumcision and represented the country's male circumcision program at several regional meetings
  • Project Description: This study intended to increase the proportion of older men (aged 20 years and above) who are circumcised, to have the greatest impact on the HIV epidemic
  • Previous studies had shown that 80% of those circumcised were aged 10-19 years
  • The goal of the study was to finalise, implement and evaluate a targeted strategy to increase the uptake of VMMC in adult men aged 20-34 years during outreach service delivery in Njombe and Tabora regions, Tanzania
  • In this study, NIMR was collaborating with Jhpiego, CDC and the London School of Hygiene and Tropical Medicine (LSHTM)

  • This study was designed to test the hypothesis that, the improvement in the availability of medicines and diagnostics in the Lake Zone region of Tanzania is due to the interventions conducted by the Treat Fever project (a USAID-funded project) rather than the strengthening of the Ministry of Health system-wide drug distribution
  • Previous data had suggested that there was a significant improvement in the availability of Artemisinin-based Combination Therapy (ACTs) and other essential medicine for Malaria case management at both public and private facilities supported by the project
  • The project aimed to reduce morbidity and mortality among children less than five years of age due to severe febrile illness in the Lake Zone regions of Tanzania.
