- Maintain knowledge of and follow the correct procedures for handling all biological, chemical, and physical materials used within the Science Learning.
- General and specific maintenance of each laboratory or room, including the care and maintenance of services, stores, laboratory workshop equipment, drainage systems, working surfaces, etc., reporting any repairs required to the appropriate person for action.
- Liaise with academic staff to discuss timetables, equipment requirements, and work plans.
- Prepare equipment and chemicals before lessons—from test tubes to state-of-the-art microscopes.
- Designing and executing laboratory testing according to standard procedures.
- Maintain and repair equipment and laboratory apparatus.
- Ensure that equipment is properly cleaned, and that chemicals and other materials are appropriately stored.
- Manage the stock control of chemicals and equipment.
- Coordinate work in the laboratory to ensure efficient use is made of expensive pieces of equipment.
- Maintain a standard of good cleanliness and tidiness throughout the laboratories and prep rooms, e.g. Work benches, whiteboards, glassware, sinks, etc.
- Maintenance of stock to meet requirements, requisitioning to the approved standards, receipt, and storage of new materials, including materials requiring special care, i.e. Toxic chemicals, radioactive materials, the return of empty bottles, and containers.
