Dar es Salaam,Tanzania

Summary

Dr. Marco Njana served as a leading Nature-Based Solutions personnel member for VCS Tanzania Country Program since 2020 to August 2025. He oversees partnership with the Tanzania Forest Services Agency (TFS) and other Government and non-governmental entities on the development of a large-scale forest carbon project in compliance with Verra Voluntary Carbon Standard (VCS) and Climate Community and Biodiversity Standard (CCBS) to be implemented on state protected areas managed by TFS. He also led project description in line with VCS and CCBS. The project aims to reduce loss of natural remaining forests in the designated national forest reserves, which are critical for biodiversity conservation. Dr. Njana also serves as a forest carbon accounting expert in the overall development of the project. Dr. Njana has reasonable familiarity with policies, laws, regulations and guidelines related to carbon trading notably forest, environmental and land policies. Before joining WCS, Dr. Njana worked for TFS and National Carbon Monitoring Centre (NCMC) of Tanzania. At TFS he oversaw management of mangrove forests while at NCMC he served as an Assistant Director and Head of Monitoring Reporting and Verification (MRV) unit. During his service, NCMC successfully prepared Forest Reference Emission Level (FREL) for the United Republic of Tanzania and submitted it to the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC) in early 2017. The FREL went through a rigorous review process and was finally published by the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change Secretariat. Tanzania is one among 40 countries worldwide and one among 11 African countries which successfully completed the submission of FREL to UNFCCC by mid-2018. FREL is one of the requirements needed for countries to participate in result-based mechanisms for reducing emissions from deforestation and forest degradation (REDD+). Tanzania’s FREL can be accessed online at: https://redd.unfccc.int/files/2017_submission_frel_tanzania.pdf He holds a PhD in forestry from the Sokoine University of Agriculture (2015). For the past 15 years, Dr. Njana has also authored and co-authored over 25 peer-reviewed articles, served as a reviewer to over 30 international journals and led many consultancy assignments on ecology and natural resources management.
