Accomplishments

Accomplishment:

Successfully led a nutrition-focused project from 2018 to address malnutrition in young children aged 6 months to 13 years and pregnant women in Morogoro and surrounding coastal regions of Tanzania. The project involved developing and distributing nutritious food products made from Orange Fleshed Sweet Potatoes (OFSP), rich in Vitamin A and Beta-Carotene, to local hospitals and clinics. Key initiatives included the creation of nutritious flour, bread, biscuits, and juice made from OFSP, effectively increasing dietary intake of essential vitamins in the community.

  • Project Impact:
  • Beneficiaries: Reached over 25,000 children and pregnant women across Morogoro and coastal regions.
  • Health Improvement: Contributed to a reduction in Vitamin A deficiency in children and pregnant women, a key target of Tanzania's National Vitamin A Deficiency Control Program.
  • Hospital Partnerships: Partnered with 15+ hospitals and health centers to distribute over 50,000 units of OFSP-based products, improving nutrition in vulnerable populations.
  • Community Outreach: Educated local communities on the importance of OFSP and its role in combating malnutrition, directly engaging over 10,000 families in nutrition workshops.
  • Sustainability & Local Impact: Supported local agriculture by sourcing OFSP from regional farmers, fostering both nutritional improvement and local economic development.
  • Key Results:
  • Vitamin A Deficiency Reduction: Contributed to a measurable improvement in Vitamin A status in targeted communities, as reported by regional health authorities, helping to decrease the prevalence of related health issues.
  • Recognition: The project was recognized by the Tanzanian Ministry of Health for its innovative approach to tackling malnutrition and its alignment with national health objectives.
  • Increased Access to Nutritious Foods: Provided essential nutrition to areas previously underserved by fortified food products, positively impacting child growth, immune function, and maternal health.

Collaborated with team of 2000 farmers in the development of Prime ministers project (PMO). Successfully led and contributed to the implementation of multiple impactful agricultural development projects between 2018 and 2019, focused on improving farming practices, enhancing entrepreneurial skills, and promoting climate-smart agriculture in Tanzania. These projects, implemented in collaboration with key international and local organizations, played a significant role in empowering farmers across the country with the tools and knowledge needed to adapt to climate change and increase agricultural productivity.

  • Key Projects Led: Prime Minister's Project (PMO) - Farming As a Business (FAAB) (Sept 2018): Collaborated with UNCTAD to promote farming as a business model, helping farmers transition from subsistence farming to commercial farming with a focus on market-driven approaches, increasing income and sustainability. Entrepreneurship Technology (EMPRETEC) (Oct 2018): Implemented by UNCTAD, this initiative enhanced entrepreneurship skills among farmers and agri-business owners, helping them access new technologies and improve their business operations for greater profitability. Training of Trainers (TOT) on Greenhouse Installation and Construction (Jan 2019): Partnered with SUGECO to equip trainers with technical skills for the installation and construction of greenhouses, enabling farmers to extend growing seasons and improve yields, especially in regions prone to climate variability. Training of Trainers (TOT) on Horticultural Production, Agribusiness, and Leadership Skills (Jan 2019): Delivered essential training on modern horticultural practices, agribusiness management, and leadership skills, empowering farmers to diversify their crops and adopt sustainable farming practices.
  • Project Impact:
  • Capacity Building: Trained over 2,000 trainers, who subsequently reached more than 50,000 farmers in all agricultural zones of Tanzania, providing them with the knowledge to apply climate-smart farming methods.
  • Climate Resilience: Introduced innovative farming techniques such as greenhouse farming and water-efficient irrigation, enabling farmers to better manage climatic risks, leading to more resilient farming systems.
  • Entrepreneurial Growth: Empowered farmers with the skills needed to run profitable agribusinesses, fostering increased investments in agriculture and improving food security.
  • Sustainability & Scaling: The knowledge shared through the TOT programs reached rural communities, ensuring that farmers across Tanzania could access and benefit from sustainable farming practices in the long term.
  • Economic Impact: Contributed to a 20% increase in agricultural productivity in participating regions, enhancing farmers' incomes and contributing to the overall economic growth of Tanzania’s agricultural sector.
  • Recognition & Acknowledgment:
  • The success of these programs was recognized by Tanzania’s Ministry of Agriculture, with Farahan Katunzi and his team praised for their efforts in building capacity, improving agricultural practices, and boosting the resilience of farmers against climate change.
