NUTRITION AND HEALTH SYSTEM OFFICER

SAVE THE CHILDREN-USAID LISHE (NUTRITION) PROJECT
  • Activity Overview: Strengthening Health, Water, Sanitation, Hygiene and Food Systems to promote the adoption of optimal nutrition among Women of Reproductive Age and Children Under Five
  • Support the implementation of Nutrition specific Interventions in the area of implementation and design strategies to improve well-being outcomes for children and women
  • Build capacity/mentoring of health care providers on nutrition assessment, counselling, classification and interpretation of nutrition status by using National Guidelines and available SOP and mentored on basic nutrition, IYCF & growth monitoring and development
  • Ensure health care providers from supported districts have knowledge on providing nutrition messages during nutrition counselling and during conducting nutrition education sessions
  • Use of quality improvement teams to include projects that will improve and strengthen nutrition service provision and linkage to care
  • Refine evidence-based clinical training materials, job aids, and curricula, supervisory systems and other training materials needed for implementation of nutrition specific interventions to meet the needs of Government of Tanzania and USAID
  • Identify capacity building needs among health care providers for continuous quality improvement in provision of nutrition services
  • Foster linkages between community-based NACS programs, livelihood and food security programs available in the district (Help in strengthening referral systems)

ACHIEVEMENTS

  • A total of 621 healthcare providers (310 female, 311 male) and 216 community health workers (CHWs) (104 female, 112 male) from 151 health facilities (140 public and 11 private) were trained on Maternal, Infant, Young Child, and Adolescent Nutrition (MIYCAN), along with Baby Friendly Hospital Initiatives
  • 108 Regional/Council Quality Improvement Team (R/CQIT) members (35 female, 73 male) were trained as Trainers of Trainees (TOTs) in Quality Improvement (QI), extending their training to 389 QIT members at the health facility level (169 female, 220 male)
  • 158 healthcare providers (76 female, 82 male) from 52 health facilities (51 public, 1 private) were strengthened on commodity forecasting and ordering for 20% poor performing facilities to address the ILS gap, and conduct training on commodity ordering and forecasting
  • 240 community health workers (115 female, 125 male) reached on refresher training on prioritizing nutrition and hygiene behaviors during the crucial first 1,000 days
  • Health facility assessment as a baseline assessment reached 252 (224 public, 28 private) health facilities out of 330 health facilities
  • Refresher training to 170 teachers (40 female, 125 male) and 5 District Education Officers (2 female, 3 male) to scale up nutrition education and promotional activities in schools to target youth and adolescents
  • Mapping of Early Childhood Care and Development (ECD) Centers for 0-3 years and 4 – 6 years and Nutrition services provided in these centers reached 386 (299 public, 87 private) ECCD centers

  • The Prevalence of stunting was decreased from 47.35 (2019) to 39.9% (2021)
  • Achieved in developing the Information Education and Communication material- Community Health Worker Training manual in Nutrition, Health and Sanitation
  • Achieved in developing translated Information Education and Communication material on Infant and Young Child Feeding Practices manual from Swahili into Kirundi Language
  • Formation of 5 Care Support Groups consists of 50 women and men
